Clicks but zero sales — the funnel leak that almost fooled me

I ran Meta Ads to a few Gumroad products. The numbers looked fine — ~390 link clicks, CPC around Rp100. Then I opened the sales export. Zero.
What
390 clicks, zero sales. A 0% conversion rate on traffic that, on paper, looked healthy. The instinct is to blame the ads. The ads were not the problem — everything after the click was.
Why it matters
You can burn a budget indefinitely tuning bids and creatives while the real leak sits downstream. CPC optimization is the last 10%. The product and the funnel decide profit. Miss that and you optimize your way to broke.
Who it's for
Anyone running paid traffic to a product — Gumroad, Shopify, a SaaS trial. If you've ever seen "great CPC, no sales," this is you.
When & where
It shows up the moment click volume looks good but sales stay flat. The leak is almost always between the click and the checkout — not in the ad account where you're staring.
How
I walked the funnel as a stranger would, and found four leaks:
- Ad pointed at a Facebook post, not the product. The link was buried in the caption — 4–5 hops to checkout. Fix: a direct link ad to the product,
?wanted=trueso checkout opens instantly. - Landing was a store grid. Cold traffic + "pick one of three" = paralysis. Fix: deep-link to one product.
- Zero social proof. New store, no reviews, a stranger asked for $12. Fix: seed honest reviews from real users first — never fake them.
- Geo–price mismatch. Ads targeted Indonesia; price was USD with card checkout. Fix: pick a lane — localize, or target a USD-native audience.
The takeaway
If your ads get clicks but no sales: stop touching the ads. Walk the funnel yourself. The leak is after the click.
